Diagnosed with right sided pneumonia leading to acute respiratory failure Free Essay Example, 2000 words

Diagnosis: Right-Sided Pneumonia Leading to Acute Respiratory Failure Diagnosis: Right-Sided Pneumonia Leading to Acute Respiratory Failure Question 1 Two days after Mr. Bukowski’s operation on the fractured right neck of femur, four key pieces of assessment data supporting the diagnosis of acute respiratory failure were observed. These includes abnormal respiration pattern, auscultation of breath sounds, measurement of arterial blood gases, and chest X-ray (CXR). The first key assessment data and the most observable symptom in the case of Mr. Bukowski is abnormal respiration pattern. The sympathetic nervous system is being stimulated by the increased carbon dioxide in the arterial blood, leading to increased heart rate and respiratory rate that helps the body to compensate for the hypercapnia and hypoxia (Smyth, 2005, 72). This is demonstrated by the elevated respiratory rate of Mr. Bukowski two days after the operation which is 28 breaths per minute and the observance of deep and labored breathing pattern. There is indication that he has been experiencing limited chest expansion as evidenced by intercostal muscle recess ion thus, indicating also his right lung has collapsed and will not received enough ventilation (Higgins & Guest, 2008, 24). We will write a custom essay sample on Diagnosed with right sided pneumonia leading to acute respiratory failure or any topic specifically for you Only $17.96 $11.86/pageorder now The abnormal respiration pattern characterized by increased respiratory effort and collapsed of the right lung supports his diagnosis of Acute Respiratory Failure. In Mr. Bukowski’s case auscultation of breath sounds is the second key assessment data needed to support the diagnosis of acute respiratory failure. Kaynar & Shama (2010) indicate that the most common reason for respiratory failure is the mismatch in the ventilation/perfusion (V/Q) (n. p). Mr. Bukowski was diagnosed with pneumonia and includes physical findings such as crackles, rales, decreased intensity of breathing sounds and presence of rhonchi breathing sounds, and used of accessory muscles during respiration. The presence of course crackles will lead to V/Q mismatch because course crackles in pneumonia indicate that he has existing secretions in the airway (Shackell & Gillespie, 2009, 18). Therefore, the contributing cause of respiratory failure in Mr. his case is diminished ventilation secondary to the presence of crackles and diminished entry sounds as revealed during the assessment process. The third key assessment data and the most definite indicator of acute respiratory failure is the measurement of arterial blood gases (ABG). Acute respiratory failure is a state in which the respiratory system fails to perform the gas exchange function (Lightower, Vedzicha, Elliott Mueller, 2008, 787).

Having taught math about 10 years, covering grades 5 – 8, I have witness on many occasions that girls stress more about completing math work and math testing than boys. Managing the Four Layers of Diversity free essay sample

Using Diversity in the Workplace Managing diversity requires an understanding for the differences in all organizational members as individuals. The attitudes and perceptions must reflect training and respect for each person and lack of stereotypes as the leading idea of what the individual adds to the company. â€Å"Organizations must first learn to value culture as we associate often from social circles, backgrounds, or cultures, making the need for quality our first objective† (Easy in Organizations 2009). Managers must encourage and reprimand based on actual occurrences and work productivity rather than the differences in the four layers of diversity, personality and internal, external and organizational dimensions we possess that make up the diversity (Kinicki, A and Kreitner, R. 98). Diversity by definition is the â€Å"multitude of individual differences and similarities that exist among people† (Kinicki, A and Kreitner, R. 97) Diversity is what makes each of us unique. It is the reason some of us are qualified for certain jobs and some of us aren’t. We will write a custom essay sample on Managing the Four Layers of Diversity or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Diversity is not about only about the common included facors like race, color, gender and ethnicity. The diversity umbrella also houses different attributes to our uniqueness such as work experience, personal habits, income and appearance (Kinicki, A and Kreitner, R. 98). Managers must use these differences to encourage diversity in the workplace. Interviewers should not hire because of the diversity, but because of the actual qualifications of the interviewees. They must however recognize what the distinction contributes to the company. We as managers must also encourage other employers to recognize and respect what every person’s diversity gives. This will remove the feelings that women and minorities are reaching glass ceilings in the work place. The glass ceiling refers to the lack of ability for women and minorities to advance to top management positions (Kinicki, A and Kreitner, R. 101). Organizations with a glass ceiling for certain employees will most likely not have the best people for a job in positions they deserve. These actions will cost the company more in terms of possible financial increase and increased productivity. These companies will base promotions from biases and prejudices. The book did point out important ways for employees to overcome the glass ceilings. The table on page 103 points of actions like: Develop leadership outside the office; Network with influential colleagues; Change companies; Be able to relocate; Seek difficult or high-visibility assignments; upgrade educational credentials; and consistently exceed performance expectations. All of these actions require the individual to take responsibility for their own organizational future. Even if the company doesn’t, they should accentuate the diversity within them to expose the negative stereotypes to be false. Doing these actions force all organizations to look at the individual. Networking with colleagues will open doors for the individual that is always seeking more difficult assignments in their current position. All of these recommendations intertwine to create opportunities for the individual. The four layers of diversity expose the differences that exist within all of us and make up our uniqueness which makes us have our own value. The four layers include: Personality; Internal Dimension like race age and gender; External Dimensions such as Income, parental status, work experience and educational background; and Organizational Dimensions like: work content/field, union affiliation, management status and seniority (Kinicki, A and Kreitner, R. 98). These differences not only create our biases but also create the biases against us.We should focus our energy on embracing the layers we cannot change which are our personality and internal or primary dimensions and work on the ones we can change like the external and organizational dimensions. If we are embracing ours and others diversity we won’t have issues with diversity instead we will have productivity with diversity at its’ root. In creating my own layers of diversity I kept everything the same but added familial upbringing in the internal dimensions.I believe it is one of the most important factors in making up out personality and it has much influence on how we view the people around us. Organizations and managers alike must embrace and value diversity of employers. We must look at individuals for who they are and not judge them by our personal stereotypes. Diversity makes us unique and must become a tool by which we respect, understand and encourage one another. Individuals must not allow glass ceilings to limit their abilities. We must all use our diversities to our advantage.

THE INVASION OF THE NEW SPAIN essays

THE INVASION OF THE NEW SPAIN essays Who would have taught that a strong group of native Indians from Mexico would someday be defeated by the introduction of Europeans into their own world. It was the year 1519 and many European conquistadors set out to conquest the New Spain. They did not know in which circumstances Mexico was at the present time. In the city of Tenochtitlan, known today as Mexico City, lived a group of native Indians known as the Aztecs. Many indigenous people from Mexico did not like the Aztecs. The Aztecs were full of violence and some even became cannibals. They sacrificed human bodies and would sometimes eat some of their body parts. European conquistadors went out in search of wealth and in return they were amazed of how Mexico was flourishing, but feared the monstrosities that Mexican inhabitants were facing. The native Europeans went in search of gold as well. The need for the search of gold brought greed within the Europeans and Mexicans. They all envied one another. Bernal Diaz Del Castillo, a native European from Spain, writes The True History of the Conquest of New Spain. It is the only wealth and true story that Castillo leaves to his children and grandchildren. In the story Castillo writes about European attitudes toward the New Spain and its inhabitants. Castillo states, Next morning, we came to a broad causeway and continued our march toward Iztapalapa. And when we saw all those cities and villages built in the water, and other great towns on dry land, and that straight and level causeway leading to Mexico, we were astounded. These great towns and cues and buildings rising from the water, all made of stone, seemed like and unchanged vision from the tale of Amadis (44). It is said in Mexican history that Mexico lies above a huge lake and to Europeans it is very surprising to see a city built on water. Literally it is very hard to believe that buildings and temples can be built on top of water, especially ...

Entrepreneurship Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words - 1

Entrepreneurship - Essay Example These theorists argue that social networks provide privileged access to entrepreneurs to their required resources which helps them progress in the business. On the other hand, there are factors other than knowing others which contribute to successful entrepreneurship. The paper develops a critical view towards the notion of social networking and contact-building and its relationship with entrepreneurship. The significance of social relations in entrepreneurship has since long been recognized with the same being used by entrepreneurs to obtain resources and advice on starting their business. This is because the need for contacts is evident at various phases of the new business. Relationships between entrepreneurs and those who possess resources required for the startup are quintessential to the success of a new business. Although the entrepreneur possesses the competence and knowledge as well as a novel idea to run the business, complementary resources may be required. Contacts provid e the resources, knowledge and/or market accessibility required for making the business idea work. Knowing individuals and organizations that operate amongst themselves broadens the resource base available to entrepreneurs for successfully running the business. Contacts that enable success of the new firm comprise the social capital and are essential components of entrepreneurial networks. The social capital, therefore, refers to the individuals who help entrepreneurs in getting things done. These contacts include, but are not limited to, individuals in the professional networks as well as friends and peers from past jobs. They form the basis of the wider entrepreneurial networks that comprise of not just individuals but clusters of companies and organizations. By increasing the size of their networks and number of contacts, entrepreneurs can get access to greater information and resources from those who are knowledgeable. Furthermore, the way in which entrepreneurs â€Å"positionà ¢â‚¬ themselves in the network determines the extent to which they are able to take advantage of their contacts. The aim of such positioning is to shorten the path to the contacts in order to get tasks done. Finally, members of the social network often tend to organize themselves by interacting amongst themselves which leads to the development of ‘multiplex’ ties that benefit the entrepreneur even more. Furthermore, family members too can play an important role in entrepreneurial success. In fact, they play a critical role in so far as entrepreneurship is examined in the context of family business (Rosenblatt et al., 1985). Therefore, knowing family members who have been involved in entrepreneurial business in the past is definitely an ingredient for success for family-run entrepreneurial businesses. Entrepreneurs can benefit from the unique business-specific knowledge that is possessed by their family members including parents. Most importantly, for maintaining confi dentiality of the business idea, most entrepreneurs may find it easier to obtain advice and guidance from their kin rather than non-kin contacts. On the other hand, having strong family ties may inhibit entrepreneurs from accessing a much larger pool of resources and information from non-kin contacts (Birley, 1985) (Renzulli et al., 2000). It is rare to have knowledgeable individuals from all disciplines of business (such as operations, marketing, HR) in one’s family (Renzulli et al., 2000). Hence, entrepreneurs will, at various times acquire the support of their acquaintances for this purpose. However, this social network is not developed instantaneously and may
